Loose Container Causes Tragic Accident In Laemchabang

Inadequate securement of a container on a speeding, 18-wheel container lorry resulted in the container flying loose to drop straight onto a pickup truck it was overtaking at the time, on 10 February, 2009, completely crushing it and its driver. Immediately afterwards, the container lorry, deprived of its load, flipped over, the cab of which literally ploughed into the ground, whilst its driver was thrown through the windscreen to his death.

At 7.10 pm, on 10 February, Pol.Lt. Jirasak Ap Phaang, Banglamung Police Investigator, was notified of the accident involving the container lorry and the pickup truck, resulting in both drivers’ deaths. Police and the rescue team immediately rushed to the scene.

At the scene, on Road 36 opposite a Shell petrol station, in the Pong area of Banglamung, police found a white Mitsubishi, 18-wheel lorry from Rayong and a Bangkok-registered, blue pickup truck, both mangled in the accident. The dead body of Mr. Sayan Pokee [41] the lorry-driver was lying in a bush, with a broken neck. In the flattened remains of the pickup truck, the dead body of the driver was later identified as army Sergeant Detboon Pansubsan [58] from Chonburi. His legs and arms were broken and his skull severely damaged.

Police questioned the local witnesses, who said that the 18-wheel lorry had been driving extremely fast in order, it transpired, to deliver its load of the plastic grains to the Thai Plastic Cheme Pan Company, Laemchabang Harbour, Chonburi. The container lorry had been in the process of overtaking the pickup truck, when suddenly the container came loose from the trailer and dropped straight down onto the pick up truck, flattening it. The trailer then flipped over and the cab embedded itself in the ground. As it did so, its driver was projected through the windscreen to his death.

The rescue team had inordinate difficulty extracting the body of the pickup truck’s driver from the remains of his vehicle. This terrible accident had taken two lives, partially because of careless securement of the container, police said. They will investigate the witnesses and other parties involved further.
