Look young and feel good forever!

Over the past 10 years there has been a dramatic change in the public’s perception of cosmetic surgery and non-surgical solutions for both Thais and foreigners. Long gone are the days when people would feel embarrassed if their friends or relatives knew they had visited a skincare clinic. Now, appearance and personality have become more and more important for those seeking sublime self-confidence or the chance to find a dream job.

“We want to be an aesthetic institute which provides a one-stop shop for male and female beauty,” says Dr. Mike Oscar Goulet, managing director of the Thonglor Clinic in Bangkok and, more recently, of the second branch on Thappraya Road, Jomtien, very close to the Grande Caribbean condominium site. “We offer the highest quality treatments and plastic surgeries to improve your appearance and to slow down signs of ageing,” he summarizes.

“We offer the highest quality treatments and plastic surgeries to improve your appearance and to slow down signs of ageing,”

Pattaya Today recently visited the Jomtien branch. In keeping with the high quality of services offered and delivered by Dr. Mike (“the farang face of the business”) and his specialist team, Thonglor Clinic is a five-star bespoke facility that has been custom designed to meet the various needs of a busy cosmetic surgery practice. The configuration and lay-out maximize customer convenience, comfort and privacy. The interior design features, clean architectural lines and finely finished surface textures underline the themes of elegance, precision and style. In fact, Thonglor Clinic on entry hardly feels like a clinic at all.

Open a little over a year, Thonglor Clinic Jomtien is already a legend on the EasternSeaboard. There are many market segments. Firstly, short-term holiday tourists may want a facelift before returning to colder climates. Long-term expats may be seeking “stop-the-clock” anti-ageing treatments on a longer term and repeat-business basis.

About half of the clinic’s customers are Thai citizens increasingly sensitive about their appearance now that the traditional, cultural hostility to cosmetic surgery has collapsed.

There is also a large gay market, both Thai and foreign, anxious to be in the forefront of the Forever Young trend. Not to mention gender re-assignment surgery for those who are absolutely convinced they are trapped in the wrong body. But whatever your needs, and whether you are gay or straight, the entire focus is on the client. “Our ethos is to provide personal and impartial guidance by listening to the patient and offering the best and least-invasive treatment to reach the desired goal,” emphasizes Dr. Mike.

Contrary to what some people believe, cosmetic surgery is far from being the sole province of the middle-aged and elderly. For example, nose and eyelid surgery is very popular amongst young people in their twenties or even in their teens. They may want to resemble their media heroes and heroines or to seek employment in the entertainment industry. A new generation is now growing up into a world where cosmetic surgery is completely normal. In Thailand today, the cosmetic business is worth around 20 billion baht a year and is expected to grow by 20 percent annually.

Contemporary cosmetic surgery inhabits a world of new technologies and technical terms. Thonglor Clinic Jomtien has all the latest products including Lipomatic-Assisted, high-definition liposculpture which is a state-of-the-art technique for sculpting the male and female torso to create a well-toned and athletic appearance. Other popular treatments for the body include the ever-popular tummy tuck (or abdominoplasty) and breast surgery for men as well as women. (Incidentally, the technical term for the excessive growth of mammary glands in males is Gynaecomastia.)

Cosmetic surgery for the face is both an anti-ageing technique and a way to address issues which people may have with the way they look. For example, those with protruding ears or bumpy noses turn to cosmetic surgery for ear or nose reshaping to achieve the desired look. The most popular surgical solutions for reducing the signs of ageing include face lifts and brow lifts as well as eye bag removal procedures.

Meanwhile, non-surgical procedures range from Botox to Hyaluronic Acid fillers that reveal a fresher you. They also include many confidence-boosting treatments like laser hair removal to help achieve smooth skin. Popular anti-ageing solutions to create a more youthful and healthy appearance such as wrinkle-relaxing injections and dermal fillers are also available at Thonglor Clinic Jomtien.

Canadian born Dr. Mike, who spent much of his medical career in Australia before setting up a teaching clinic in Bangkok in 2009 with business partner Chakrit Thararam, looks with understandable confidence to the future. “We are looking now at the growing Russian and Japanese markets, and we are conscious that many of our current customers are repeat-business clients. It helps that I speak French and my partner German.”

It’s also true that the upcoming Asean Economic Community, where 10 regional countries will form a free-trade area in 2015, will have a knock-on effect on the cosmetic surgery field in the medium term. Skincare clinics are already in their infancy in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, and it’s expected that there will be a growing mobility of the populations of the ASEAN group. One thing is for sure. Dr. Mike and the Thonglor Clinics in Bangkok and in Jomtien are ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
