The TUIfly Nordic flight was originally scheduled to take off for Phuket at 3:25 Sunday morning, but was not able to leave until after 6:00 in the evening.

Finnmatkat said that the delay was caused by a faulty wing on the Boeing 747, which required a spare part to be flow in from Paris.

The plane has 582 passengers, 477 of whom are from Finland and the rest from Sweden.

Leisure flights this busy holiday season have been plagued by frequent delays, attributed to a combination of a high use of plane capacity, knock-on effects, and bad luck.

A Finnmatkat flight to Thailand was delayed by nearly 24 hours shortly before Christmas. At that time there was a problem with the engine. A Finnmatkat spokesperson said that two different aircraft were involved.

Vacationers travelling on national carrier Finnair continue to suffer lengthy delays.

A flight returning from Phuket in Thailand was delayed by a full 18 hours, arriving in Helsinki after seven on Thursday evening.

The flight was delayed during a stop-over in Ahmedabad airport in India, when a problem with the second engine was detected. Local technicians were unable to solve the problem, forcing authorities to fly in a mechanic from Helsinki.

The 173 passengers on board the flight were accommodated at a hotel in Ahmedabad.

Cabin pressure problems forced another Finnair flight bound for Japan to turn back after being airborne for just under four hours. Jam packed flight schedules have forced extensive delays throughout the end-of-year holiday season.
