Pattaya, 27 October 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Under the South Pattaya Overpass, a mass of 300 Pattaya people from various occupations met to voice their disapproval of the Pattaya sky-train (monorail) study and design project. They were wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan ‘Pattaya People don’t get sky-train’. The protesters held other signs showing their opinions. The protest group moved en masse along Pattaya 2nd Road to finish at the Loma Roundabout, North Pattaya, the location of the first phase of sky-train planned by Pattaya City Hall.

Mrs. Rattana Ongsombat, a vociferous protester, said that the project illustrated that the Pattaya administration did not care about the lives of local people. The group has protested in the past about various projects initiated by Pattaya’s Mayor, but were most concerned about the impact of the sky-train. Mrs. Rattana voiced her opinion that Khun Ittiphol did not care about the Pattaya people’s objections about this or other sustainable projects. She and others consider that the project will severely affect the city, accordingly the protesters want to mobilize the local people to be aware of and protect themselves against the threat.

Mrs. Rattana said the main objection was that the monorail will block the natural views of Pattaya City and cause unsightly signs to be erected as well as creating a noise nuisance that is against the tourists’ interests, as they only want to relax in a nice atmosphere. The huge investment costs necessary  were also unlikely to be recouped. Mrs. Rattana was of the opinion that cleaning up the resort and security would be better ways to promote Pattaya City as an  attractive resort destination.

Mr. Surat Mekawarajun (Banglamung Culture Congress Chairman) added that market research conducted by Chotjinda Muchell Consultant ltd., the project consultant, indicating that most locals were in favour of a rapid transport system was flawed, as the majority of respondents were baffled by the academic terminology employed.

The protesters insisted they will continue their protest, even if City Hall decides to go ahead with the sky-train.
