Thanabat Prasertwit (Deputy Superintendent of Anti-Human Trafficking Division) and the officers of Paweena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women had arrested a gang of loan sharks at Wang Thong River Park village, Tambon Khukhot, Amphur Lamlookka, Pathum Thani province, which consisted of 4 defendants that were: Mr. Athikhom Longthong, aged 25, address 174/1 Moo 6 Tambon Lad Yao, Amphur Lad Yao, Nakhon Sawan province and Mr. Sakchai Klinphong, aged 39, address 12 Moo 8 Tambon Thar Soong, Amphur Mueang, Uthai Thani province, and 2 defendants (didn’t know their names). The officers also assisted 16 children aged between 14-18 which consisted of 10 males and 6 females that were being detained at house no. 802/900 and 802/906 and they also seized some debtors’ documents together with hoses, handcuffs and steel pipes.

Mrs. Paweena Hongsakul revealed that on February 9, 2014 there was Mrs. Sri (alias), aged 50, who is a vendor in Pathum Thani province, complained to Paweena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women at Khlong 7, Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok road, Pathum Thani province, that her son was deceived by a loan shark gang to work as a debt collector and didn’t get the salary and was assaulted and detained.

Mr. Wan (alias), aged 15, who is the son of Mrs. Sri (alias) told the officers that his friends had persuaded him to work as a debt collector in the area of Tambon Rangsit by riding a motorbike with another friend. He said that the work agreement was that he would receive a salary of 4,000 THB per month from the capitalist named Mr. Samrerng who seemed to be a kind man and the manager named Mr. Chai that takes care of every employee. All the employees had to wake up before 9.00 a.m. otherwise they would be punished by being thrashed with hoses until they were severely injured and if they could not collect the debts from the debtors each day the manager would send other employees to collect the debt from that debtor, again and if they still could not get money from the debtor then the manager would threaten and assault the employees.

Mrs. Paweena said that now the officers knew that Mr. Samrerng is the big capitalist and during questioning the children the officers found that some of them were frightened due to their parents had borrowed money from this loan shark gang and still owed debts. Therefore, the officers detained all defendants to investigate at the Operation Centre on Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking and will take all children to Paweena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women to take care of them further.
