Pattaya, 25th April 2010: At approximately 3.00 am, Police Captain Santiphon Phuwadonkanok (Pattaya Police Investigator) received notification that a security guard at the Amari Orchid Pattaya Hotel, Loma Curve, Pattaya Beach, caught a Katoey who had snatched a tourist’s necklace.

The Officer arrived to find Mr. Wanlop Watthanachot [20] a security guard and his team had withheld Mr. Phanuwat Chachumwong [21] from Sakonnakorn wearing a ladies dress with the stolen cross and chain valued at 32,000 baht in his possession.  Nearby, Mr. Anton Kharmov [22] a Russian National and his parents were waiting for the arrival of the police.

On questioning, the guard Mr. Wattanachot, stated that before the incident occurred, he saw the victim and his family go to the local Family Mart.  On their return to the hotel, a Katoey who had been hanging around, followed them from behind and without warning, snatched the necklace from Mr. Khramov’s neck then tried to make his escape. The victim and his parents gave chase, catching the offender who was restrained by Mr. Watthanachot and his colleagues.  The offender struggled in an effort to escape which angered the victims’ mother who then hit him in the face.  It was at this point that the police were informed.

Mr. Chachumwong kept crying, claiming that he had not committed an offence and complained he had been assaulted by the Russians. The victim’s family kept hold of the culprit and the evidence.

Mr. Kharamov claimed that he and his family had traveled to Pattaya for the last 3 years as Thailand and Pattaya had always come across as being nice and safe holiday destination. This was the first time that they had experienced any negative issues on their holiday.

The Katoey was found to have a history of arrests for possession of Ya-Ba and was taken to the station for further questioning where he was charged with theft.
