PATTAYA – April 23, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; the driver and the boat attendant of one of the speedboats involved in a collision off Koh Larn came to Pattaya police station to surrender themselves and acknowledge the charges.

However, the speedboat driver denied causing the collision that severely injured several Korean tourists, including one man who lost his leg. He instead blamed the driver of the other boat.

The driver of the speedboat Kor Nongmai 7 carrying the tourists was identified as Mr. Roongaroon Homlamduan, age 26. He was accompanied by the boat attendant, identified as Mr. Latthaphol Sonphu, age 30.

They both came to acknowledge the accusations of performing their job duties carelessly, resulting in other people getting severely injured. Initially, both men denied all accusations against them.

During questioning by the investigative police officers, Mr. Roongaroon, the driver of speed boat Kor Nongmai 7, claimed that he didn’t drive the boat to collide with the speed boat Sor Khemthong, which was awaiting refueling, but was not anchored, and was floating freely.

Mr. Roongaroon explained that he was bringing the tourists back from a diving excursion, and they were approaching Ta Wan beach. About 100 meters from shore, he saw the speedboat Sor Khemthong was parking and floating without dropping its anchor. Its engine was still running, and the boat didn’t park to refill the oil.

When he arrived at the spot of the collision, the head of the other speedboat Sor Khemthong collided with the left front side of his boat, creating a big hole in his boat. The impact caused the Korean tourists to fall on the deck floor and some to fall into the sea.

So he and the boat boy tried to assist all the tourists to send them back to the shore for the officers to assist them. Meanwhile, the driver of the other speedboat Sor Khemthong and his boat boy were only standing and watching them with startled looks on their faces, Mr. Roongaroon said.

After hearing the testimony from one party, police still couldn’t summarize the exact cause of boat collision. However, the police have announced the accusations made against the drivers of both speedboats to be acknowledged.

As for the cause of incident, the forensic police will continue their investigation and intend to get the testimony of the other driver, who fled the scene after the accident and has not surrendered himself.
