Queen Sirikit, Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Crown Princess Mahajakri Sirindhorn, and other members of the royal family also attended the ceremony on Tuesday morning.

King Bhumibol was crowned the King of Thailand on May 5th, 1950. Next year will see his 60th anniversary coronation.

For Tuesday?s Coronation Day celebrations, His Majesty the King granted permission to open Prasat Phra Thep Bidon or the Royal Pantheon located in the Grand Palace, which is normally reserved for the royal family, to the public.

In the evening, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva presided over a candle-lit ceremony and led Cabinet members, diplomats and dignitaries in swearing an oath of allegiance to mark the auspicious celebration of the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol?s coronation at Government House. Similar candle-lit and oath ceremonies were also held at other key places in the capital Bangkok and provinces nationwide.

Thais flocked to government-organised celebrations and festivities including rare performances and exhibitions in honour of His Majesty the King, from Bangkok?s Royal Plaza through Rajadamnoen avenue, from 4pm til midnight.

Thais across the country also expressed their loyalty to the monarch and national reconciliation in provincial coronation celebrations. (TNA)
