The operation was performed to drain excessive cerebrospinal fluid, which may cause him to walk unsteadily. The condition is common in the elderly and the operation is a standard treatment, the bureau said in a statement.

The 83-year-old king has been admitted to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok since September 2009 with fever, fatigue and a lung inflammation.

The Royal Household reiterated in its statement that the king had recovered from lung infection but continued to stay in hospital for physical rehabilitation and to ensure good nutrition to regain his strength.

“The medical team consulted with both foreign and local specialists and agree to perform spinal tap”, the bureau said adding that the king was otherwise fine and eating normally.

King Bhumibol is the world’s longest reigning monarch.

He has no official political role but has been credited with intervening at moments of acute political tension to find a non-violent resolution.

There is near universal affection for him among the Thai public but the country also has harsh “lese-majeste” laws which punish any criticism of the monarchy with up to 15 years in prison
