‘Khao Kheow’ Open Zoo Puts New Years Gift Kyalas on Show

The open zoo 'Khao Kheow' is opening an exhibition for its guests entitled 'African Savannah' in which they will introduce 5 Nyalas, a New Years Present from Nakhorn Rachasima Zoo.

Chonburi , 30th December 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At 8.00 a.m. the ‘Khao Kheow’ Open Zoo welcomed its new members, 1 male and 4 female Nyalas. They were given as a New Years present from Nakhorn Rachasima Zoo, to let the public, and children in particular, enjoy these cute animals.

 

The Nyalas will be part of an exhibition called ‘African Savannah’ . Also featured will be giraffes, zebras, oryxs, springboks, impalas, ostriches and more.

The Nyala (scientific name : Tragelaphus angasi) is a relatively big antilope. The male’s fur grey with a 3-14 white stripes on its sides. Its lower legs are yellow brown, and it weighs about 108 kg. The female is a little smaller and doesn’t have any horns. Its colour is light brown or brown-yellow and it weighs around 62 kg.

 

Nyala’s natural habitat are sparse forests; they are usually found on grasslands near water sources, in the Savannah, South Africa. As herbivores they ingest mainly leaves and grass. Nyalas are usually found in small groups. Once a group changes, the mother and the child become the main members in the group, while the big male will chose to stay alone.

Pregnancy for a Nyala lasts for 220 days, and each time 1 Nyala is born.
