Kenyan Wins Pattaya Marathon Yet Again

Pattaya, July 20 [PDN] : The ever-popular Pattaya Marathon, held on July 19, 2009, with over 2000 contestants, and 200 prizes, amounting to Bt2.4 million, was won, for the fourth successive year, by a Kenyan runner. The mayor said this year’s event, sponsored by Pattaya City Chonburi Admin. and TAT was very successful.

Pattaya Marathon 2009, the 18th annual event, started on Soi 4, Pattaya Beach Road, at 4:10 am, on 19 July. The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Sehnee Jitkasem, the Chonburi Governor, Mrs. Pasarin Sawetarat, the Vice President of Pattaya TAT, Major General Arnat Rattanapol, the representative of the Athletic Association of Thailand (patron: His Majesty The King (A.A.T.) and Mr. Ittipon Khunpleum, Pattaya City Mayor.

One of the prime aims of the Pattaya Marathon, one of Pattaya’s annual activities, is to promote the tourism industry in the city, in particular and in Thailand, in general. This year, there were nearly 2000 runners, both tourists and locals.

This year, they also added three new categories: male runners 70+, female runners 60+ and both sexes 60+.With the addition of these three new categories, it set a Thai record for the most prizes (200), totaling over Bt2.4 million.

Apart from local Thais, there were many international participants, from 12 separate countries, including Kenya, China, Japan, Hong Kong etc.

The Results of the Race:

Winner of the overall Male International Marathon: Mr. Micah Kipserem Chuma from Kenya in the time of 2:22:38 hours. Winner of the overall female International Marathon: Sunisa Sai-lomyen from, Chiang Rai, Thailand, who achieved 4th place. She won the event because Miss Pamela Jemeli Kipchage, from Kenya, who would otherwise have been the winner, was disqualified for taking water from her 3rd-place friend in an unauthorized location.

Marathon Wheelchair Winner: Thai champion, Prawat Wahorum in the time of 1:38: 4 hours.

 

Mayor Ittipon was keen to point out that Pattaya had provided a special programme for visitors and all the Marathon participants during the time of the event, by giving special discount prices throughout the entire city, all day long. The providers included hotels, golf courses, restaurants, and all the tourist attractions.
