THAILAND – January 16, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; details of the 2013 Thailand Tourism Awards were announced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). More than 270 government departments and private businesses in the tourism industry are competing in various categories in the bi-annual contest, which is intended to promote and improve Thailand’s tourism industry.

The TAT-sponsored competition began in 1996 and is held every two years, said Mr. Supakit Poljan, the director of the tourism authority’s product promotion department.

The TAT holds the competition to promote Thai tourism industries and to lift the standard of tourist attractions, including the business and service sectors, to keep up with the development of Thailand’s tourism industry and to drive the economy of the country, Mr. Supakit said.

Organizations belonging to both private and government sectors are eligible for the competition. The contest categories include sectors that feature natural attractions, history and culture, eco-tourism, agricultural tourism and recreational tourism.

This year there are both government and private agencies entered in the contest from across Thailand, which were qualified by the board of directors who had been selected by the tourism authority. Judges for the contest have started to check areas where the tourism businesses are located. The first visit took place from January 11-15 in Northeast Thailand.

Among the places visited by judges were the Phu Lanka National Park in Banpang Nakornpanom; which is in the category of environmental management; and the Ban Tareua community in Nawa Nakornpanom, which is famous for its Issan crafts.

The judges then went to visit Phupan National Park in Phupan, Sakolnakorn. The park is a leisure tourist attraction for learning, where they had marketing management to accommodate visitors. The last tourist business visited was the Bird Paradise Extreme Resort in Sawangdandin, Sakolnakorn. The attraction for tourists was training for parachute launching. There were a lot of both Thais and foreigners who loved to visit the place for adventure.

Mr. Sukit said that after the judges in each category are finished visiting the chosen areas, and have listened to presentations and checked the properties and tourism potential of each place, they will announce and reward the winners in each category on “World Tourism Day” on September 27.
