North Atlanta, Friday, the 13th A Fulton County magistrate will drop misdemeanor domestic abuse charges against John Mark Karr if he gets counseling. Magistrate Stephanie Davis also dismissed related charges filed against Karr’s 86-year-old father, but without the requirement for counseling.
Police took Mark Karr to jail and also charged his father, Wexford Karr, with simple battery, a misdemeanor.
The father and son struggled briefly when Mark Karr tried to stop his father from completing the 911 call, according to police reports. The phone was knocked to the floor where it shattered.

Wexford Karr said that, while he called police to stop the fight, he didn’t think his son should have been arrested.

Mark Karr had been released Sunday after posting a $3,000 bond. He is to appear in court again on Sept. 7.

Mark Karr and his girlfriend hugged when Davis announced she’ll dismiss the charges if Karr gets 24 weeks of domestic violence counseling. “He’s not a violent man, I’m not a victim,” Simmons said. “It’s because of his notoriety only.”

“I do not admit anything physical happened,” Karr said, adding he will continue living with his father. “I love my Dad.”

Karr was unknown until last August when he claimed he was with 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey on the day 10 years ago when she was killed in her parents’ Boulder, Colo., home.

At the time he surfaced publicly, Karr was a teacher in Thailand. He returned to the United States and DNA testing cleared him of the crime.

He said, it’s been difficult for him to have a normal life during the past year because he gets “harassed” by law enforcement for things like sitting on a park bench in his upscale neighborhood. He said sometimes people think his girlfriend is in her teens and call police.
