Japan: 4 Dead, 21 In Critical Condition After Food Poisoning

At least four people have died and 21 others are in a critical condition after a string of food poisoning cases at a ‘‘yakiniku’’ barbecue restaurant chain in Toyama, central Japan.

The 70-year-old woman’s death was confirmed from food poisoning today after she dined at an outlet of the Yakiniku-zakaya Ebisu chain in Toyama on April 23, a local government official said.

She was a family member of another woman in her 40’s who dined with her and died on Wednesday.

In addition, two boys in Toyama and Fukui prefectures also died in April in the food poisoning cases involving the restaurant chain operator, Foods Forus Co, based in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture.

According to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK and Kyodo News, around 30 people have been hospitalized in the food poisoning outbreak, with about 21 in a serious condition food poisoning. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli bacteria including the O-111 and O-157 strains have been detected in many of the cases.
