The blaze broke out around 11:30 am, destroying the 007 set at Pinewood Studios, located roughly 30 kilometers west of London.

According to fire officials, eight fire trucks had to be called to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The sound stage had been transformed into a replica of Venice where the film, with a reported budget of 72 million USD, is partly based.

Television footage showed smoke rising from the building, with the roof of the set charred and caved in. Firefighters had to use special equipment to put out the fire.

Brian Dugdale, the firefighter in charge of controlling the blaze, said: “Luckily the stage was just being disassembled after a shoot and there weren‘t any of the hazards that you would normally associate with filming, there weren‘t any pyrotechnics or anything like that.”

“There were a number of welding kits on the stage that were being used by some TYPEers and one of the elements of the welding kit is an acetylene cylinder and that is still alight and so we‘re dealing with that.”

Roads near the studio were briefly shut down, the blaze was contained, and no one was hurt, said Vicky Evans, a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police.

“Casino Royale,” due for release in October, will be the first featuring new James Bond actor Daniel Craig. Craig was chosen last year to replace Pierce Brosnan as British super-spy James Bond.
