International, the 25th of August 2010: Puma, who have backed the lively Jamaican since the age of 16, refused to put an exact figure on the contract but a spokesperson revealed it was “by far the largest ever given to a track and field athlete.”

Puma chairman and CEO Jochen Zeitz said of Bolt, “He’s an iconic global sports star and as such he’s now remunerated. He’s shined a global spotlight on the sport; his winning personality and phenomenal physical prowess are a unique combination. The way he both engages his fans and is energised by them has helped his popularity escalate to extraordinary levels over the past two years.”

Following his demolition of both the world 100m and 200m world records, Bolts ‘media value’ has been reported at over Bt3 billion by several marketing experts, who speculate that the current 3-year deal will fetch Bolt approximately Bt400 million per year.

Prior to Bolts contract the largest reported athletics sponsorship deal was attributed to Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva and Chinese company Li Ning valued at a meagre Bt47 million per year in comparison.

In extending his contract with Puma until 2013, it is almost guaranteed that Bolt will feature as a prominent marketing figure for the sports manufacturer in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics. Puma also revealed that it would interact with the sprinter over various new footwear designs and developments.

In comparison to other sports icons, Bolt has now been projected into a similar sponsorship bracket including the likes of Maria Sharapova, who earlier this year signed a Bt2.2 billion 8-year deal with Nike.
