Pattaya, the 4th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: On Tuesday, police Lieutenant Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong (Pattaya Police Superintendent) and his team presented the positive progress in a foreign assault and robbery by displaying the arrest of one of the offenders to the media. Mr. Ali Baghi [23] and Iranian national was arrested after the victim, Mr. Reza Shivaz [31] from Ireland, positively identified him as a member of the gang that attacked him on the 26th of April 2010.

Mr. Shivaz was attacked and robbed of over 100,000 baht in possessions and cash after an altercation with a gang of Iranian men near the Marine Hotel in South Pattaya. It is now understood that the initial altercation had been started after Mr. Shivaz intervened in an argument between the gang of Iranians and a Thai lady. Allegedly Mr. Shivaz had captured video footage of the incident before giving the lady a lift on his motorbike to her residence in Pratamnak, the scene of the subsequent assault and robbery. It is now also believed that Mr. Shivaz had been friendly with the group of Iranians prior to the incident, having spent time drinking at the same bar.

Upon his arrest Mr. Baghi reluctantly confessed to having been a part of the gang of Iranians involved in the assault and robbery of Mr. Shivaz. Mr. Baghi, in a conflicting report, explained to police that the incident occurred after the victim and himself had been flirting with the same girl at an undisclosed beer bar in South Pattaya. When questioned in relation to the whereabouts of Mr. Shivaz’s possessions, the offender stated that two of the other gang members had taken the motorbike, mobile phone and money before going into hiding.

Police Lt. Col. Suwanla-ong revealed that the other gang members were already known to police and investigations would continue until they are successfully apprehended. Mr. Baghi will now remain in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings to commence.
