The story starts back in spring 2007 when Barbara was still living through to autumn 2008 when she passes away then on to spring 2009 when the trial is well underway and is told in flashbacks.

Judge Rusty Sabich is a happily married man who sympathizes with his bipolar wife Barbara and law graduate son Nat. As happy as he is in his marriage, he starts an extramarital affair with Anna, his formal law clerk who is young enough to be his daughter and to complicate matters further, his election to the Supreme State Court is due. Any news of his affair will not only cost him his wife, but also his career.

A year later, Rusty’s affair with Anna is at an end and she is now dating his love struck son, but is worried about Nat finding out about her relationship with his father. Suddenly, Rustys’ world caves in. He is accused of murdering his wife when she fails to get up and he sits beside her for twenty four hours in a daze instead of calling the emergency services. When she is finally seen she has been dead a while which leads to his son Nat wondering if his father is guilty or not.

Acting prosecuting attorney Tommy Motlo assisted by his deputy chief Jim Brand, sees hi chance to finally get even with Rusty by gathering enough evidence against him to bring his case to trial. A thriller type court battle takes up much of the story.

This is a solid plot with a legal style court thriller focusing on the drama of the trial with strong characters, detailing the set up and giving points of view from the different characters and their secrets.
