Inmate’s Death Sparks Riot In Samut Sakhon Prison

About 50 inmates in Samut Sakhon prison erupted in a riot after a prisoner died in his cell. Inmates said prison officials had ignored the ailing convict. However, a truce was negotiated, and no one was injured. About 400 officers were sent to the prison to help.

SAMUT SAKHON – March 17, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; A riot broke out in the early morning hours at Samutsakorn prison. About 50 angry prisoners had joined together to protest after a prisoner died in his cell.

The prisoners accused prison officials of ignoring their cries to help the 25-year-old inmate, who was left unattended in his cell for several hours before he died, reportedly of a heart attack. Protestors said the death was largely due to unsatisfactory living conditions inside the prison, where the welfare of prisoners is not a high concern.

Officers rushed to negotiate with the prisoners, and no one was injured in the brief riot. Order was restored after a truce was negotiated. About 400 police officers were on standby outside the prison as a precaution.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Thayarit Aekphaophan, Commander, Samutsakorn province revealed details of the incident. During the time between 2 to 3 a.m., a prisoner suffered heart failure and died in his sleeping quarters.

After his death, the officers of the prison wanted go inside to inspect the corpse. But the group of 50 prisoners didn’t consent to let the officers to go inside. They claimed that the prison didn’t take good care of this prisoner, which caused him to die.

The rioters also ruined property inside the prison, until the officers of the prisoner had to fire warning shots from their guns several times to threaten the rioters in order to control the situation.

Later, the prison officers took control of the situation and let the group of prisoners making trouble to occupy the sleeping quarters of the prison. When the commissioner of the prison went to negotiate with the prisoners, initial negotiations were unsuccessful.

However, Pol. Maj. Gen. Thayarit Aekphaophan had commanded the police to control the group of rioters, and the police in the nearby police stations sent a total of 400 officers with weapons to support and take care of the situation to protect the other prisoners from the rioters.

Mr. Sophon Yimpreecha, the commander of Samutsakorn prison, said the officers have controlled the situation, and he had to mobilize the forces of 400 officers to take care of any further disturbances after the incident occurred, because he did not know whether there will be the other prisoners or other prisoners who intend to make further trouble. But he confirmed that the officers are now in control of the situation, and no one got injured.
