5th December 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 12.00 a.m. Pattaya Police Lieutenant Kriang Kraiwutbuagla, received a report that and female Indian tourist had drowned in the sea at Tawaen beach on Koh Laan. Her relatives and tourist guide managed to take her ashore at Bali Hai harbour, where police officers and a rescue foundation team hurried to investigate.

The deceased was identified as Mrs. Ratnamala Pradip Korad, a 51-year-old Indian tourist (passport no. 2792086). She was wearing a green traditional Indian dress which was soaked with water. Her body showed clear signs of drowning and she was covered in sand. There were no visible wounds that would indicate a struggle or attack. Mrs Korad had been dead for approximately 1 hour by the time the officials arrived, and her friends and family were standing crying next to the body.

The tourist guide Mr. Kitiya Saengam informed that he had taken the group of Indian tourists out to visit the Tawaen beach on Koh Laan and they arrived at around 11.15 am. The group scattered to enjoy the beach activities or swim. Mrs. Korad and her friends and family took a ride on a banana boat. Everyone was wearing a safety vest, and the banana boat was driving as normal and everyone seemed to be having fun. When the banana boat driver shook off the passengers, as they usually do, it turned out that Mrs. Korad was not familiar with sea water activities and and choked on the water. She was immediately brought back to shore, but she had already passed away. The friends and family members said she was not used to playing in the water and she must have panicked, causing her to choke and drown.

The police filed the reports from the deceased’s family and friends, the tour guide and banana boat driver as evidence. Further detailed investigations of the body will however be made in order to be certain of the cause of death. The friends and family of Mrs. Korad expect the cause to be found as accidental drowning. The embassy of India have been contacted and will be informed of further prceedings.
