Bangkok, the 17th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The two Indian nationals on a Jet Airways flight from Kolkata were apprehended after parcels that they had been attempting to take through customs were thought to be suspicious by airport customs officers.

Declared as glassware the packages were of a vastly different weight to that which was noted on the customs document whilst an uneven x-ray photograph further supplemented the officer’s initial suspicions. A Subsequent search of the packages uncovered a massive concealment of the illegal class-1 narcotic Ketamine, also known as ‘K’ or ‘Special K.’

In total, customs officers confiscated some 63kg of the drug with an estimated street value of approximately Bt180 million. Both suspects, Mr. Chakraborty Joy [30] and Mr. Roy Abhijit [28] have been detained on drug smuggling charges whilst the consignment of illegal narcotics has been confiscated as evidence. The drug packages were been wrapped in a thin layer of zinc, carbon paper and black plastic in an attempt to fool x-ray machines.

Allegedly the two men have stated that they were part of a group of 8 transnational drug traffickers and had merely been the ones designated to take the Ketamine through customs in Bangkok. Narcotics Suppression Division police are now searching for the alleged accomplices although no names have been released to the press at present.

Ketamine is largely used be veterinary clinics and emergency or intensive care units to induce and maintain general anaesthesia, usually combine with a sedative. Recreational use is rife due to the drugs ability to produce a dissociative hallucinogenic state for the user, known as depersonalization or derealisation. It is more commonly insufflated (inhaled) or injected by the user however the drug can also be ingested or smoked.
