India Bombing

Terrorists strike again! In what looks to be another horrific terrorist attack, Mumbai, India was devastated early last night. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, was the scene of a series of horrible train bombings. The Indian commuter rail system, one of the busiest in the world, was rocked by eight deadly explosions.

Starting at about 6 p.m. local time, eight separate bombs were set off on eight different commuter trains. Officials believe that these attacks had been carefully planned because the attacks took place within 25 kilometers of each other over a period of thirty minutes. The attacks took place during the busiest time for the rail system, the evening rush hour.

At the best of times, there is standing room only on these tightly packed cars. However, during rush hour, the cars get so packed that you have to stand with one foot on top of the other, and it’s not uncommon to see people hanging off the sides with one arm. These people would have been the first casualties blown off of the train.

It would have been much worse for the people inside the tightly packed train. The explosion would have tore through flesh and bone, an explosion strong enough to tear apart the car like it was a paper bag. The initial blast destroyed the car that housed the bomb, and threw the rest of the train apart.

At least 190 people are dead and another 625 are severely injured and receiving treatment at local hospitals.

High ranking Government Officials said that they had been warned about the impending attacks in India, but, without knowing where or when the attacks were going to take place, there was not much that they could do to prevent this tragedy.

No one has yet come forth to claim responsibility for the deadly attacks, but suspicion quickly turned to Muslim militants fighting New Delhi‘s rule in disputed Kashmir. Pakistan‘s government quickly denounced the blasts.
