Police said 18 other passengers were injured in two blasts on the coaches of the Samjhauta Express near the Panipat city which lies north of Indian capital New Delhi after midnight.

Passengers said they heard two blasts about 50 miles north of New Delhi while the train was en route to Pakistan. The explosions ignited a fire, which completely consumed two train cars. According to a top railway official, two suitcases containing improvised explosive devices were found at the site.

The railway attack appears to be the work of Kashmiri militants, most likely Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was responsible for the July 2006 railway bombings in Mumbai.

The attack comes ahead of Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri’s three-day visit to New Delhi beginning Feb. 21, where he is expected to meet with President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and his counterpart Pranab Mukherjee as part of the ongoing peace process between the two countries.
