Illegally Sold Controlled Drug used for Termination of Pregnancy

A grade 12 student in Pattaya has been admitted to hospital after ingesting a controlled drug she bought via the internet in order to terminate her own pregnancy.

Pattaya, 15th October 2010 [Pattaya Daily News] Public Health Minister Mr. Jurin Laksanavisit and Food and Drug Administration Secretary-General Dr. Phiphat Yingseri held a public announcement from the Alangkan Theatre, Na Jomtien, Sattahip of the case of a grade 12 student who had illegally obtained medication via the internet in an attempt to abort her own pregnancy that resulted in her admission to hospital in an unconscious state which was one of the side effects of the drug.

Subsequently the Food and Drug Administration with the co-operation of the consumer protection and drug suppression police investigated the website that advertised the illegal sale of the drug Cytotec to youngsters for the use of abortions. Cytotec, a small white hexagon shaped pill is a controlled drug used only in hospitals by qualified medical staff for the use of curing duodenum lesions and the stomach. The use is prohibited for pregnant women because of its ability to terminate pregnancies.

During the investigation officers discovered that a student had ordered 1 pack of the medication from the website www.cytotec4u.com. On the 10thOctober 2010 at 5.00pm money was transferred into the account of Mrs. Phin Sirisarungkhan (50). On the 11th October 2010 at approximately 09.47 am, the product was sent from the Golf PK Herb to the student.

On the 14th October 2010, the Food and Drug Administration had joined forces with the division of consumer protection and suppression police in their investigation of the suspect Mrs. Sirisarungkhan at her home at Trad Province. She was arrested and charged with illegally selling a controlled drug for the use of abortions.

Her sentence may be detention of not over five years plus a fine of not over 10,000 baht. If the drug is found to be a fake import, the sentence could be 1-20 years detention and a fine of 2,000-10-000 baht.

Mr. Laksanavisit has warned people to be aware of advertisements on this particular type of website, adding that illegal drugs are dangerous and can in some circumstances be fatal. In addition to this, the website operators, dealers, and producers may not post advertisements for illegal drugs especially promoting abortions. All the suspects will be sentenced and fined and the websites closed down.

Consumers can call 1556 24 hours a day regarding information on website that are considered to be illegal and dangerous.
