90 Boat Turnout Sets Record at Royal Cliff
With the longest title in the book, the “12th Pattaya Mail Peter Cummins Classic 2006, Royal Cliff Beach Resort Regatta,” got underway early on the Saturday afternoon of 25th March. Conditions were absolutely perfect, with a stiff but steady South-westerly wind. This kept the crewmen (and women) “on their toes,” and saw some great finishes with the good onshore winds. There were a record of over 90 entries, with the smaller sail boats suffering a few capsizes, but in spite of this, all the sailors had an exciting and very personally rewarding day. The sailing competitions got underway at around 12.00 hours (2.00 pm), and finished by a little after 16.00 hours (4.00 pm), and this allowed the time for everyone to “clean up” before the big “Royal Cliff” poolside party and presentation, that was staged on the Sunday evening, around the Royal Cliff Resort’s large outdoor swimming pool.

This party was also organized as a Charity Fundraising event and saw one of the sponsors, “European Security Concepts,” donate some additional funds. This led to the total amount of cash donations, pushed to a new record of over 300,000 baht, which will be greatly appreciated by the various charities in the Pattaya region. This news breaking event is held at this particular time, because it is the birthday of the founder and long-time Expat, Mr. Peter Cummins, who received “Royal Recognition” from our King, for the efforts that he has put in over the years, to successfully promote this event. Originally from the island state of Tasmania in Australia, he went overseas working for the United Nations, and upon retiring in Thailand, he envisaged the grand idea of a annual large scale regatta event for Pattaya City. With such heavyweight organizers as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Rotary Club of Jomtien – Pattaya, and Pattaya City Hall, this event was once again highly successful. Dozens of corporate sponsors and local business organizations also did their bit and gave generously, to make this annual event yet again another big success.
