How to Live Frugally

Is living ‘frugally’ something you have thought about but not yet tried? Maybe you have tried, but can’t seem to master it. Living frugally can have many benefits like saving on finances and reducing stress. Living frugally simply means to go without, do with less or waste less, live a more simple life without getting into debt especially as the cost of living is constantly on the increase.

Old habits die hard and it is not easy to learn new habits, especially at our time of life, but then again it is not impossible. You have to have the right frame of mind and the ability to focus. Frugal living is just being aware of the way you live. Living a frugal life can be beneficial by saving money.  Starting with our day to day shopping, the use of household fuel such as water and electricity, gift giving and celebrations and care of our health, all these areas can help to reduce the stresses of modern life and spending.

It is so easy to learn how to spend money, in fact it is practically second nature to some of us, but spending what we don’t have is what leads us into financial difficulties. We all now live in a society that believes getting into debt to have what we want is the norm. The truth of the matter is we do not have to break the bank or always be broke in order to possess what we like.  We should find creative ways to obtain what we want without having to spend what is not freely available.

One of the most common reasons people become frugal is the desire or need to save money, so one of the first things to do when turning to a more frugal way of life is to plan your finances which means firstly, looking at your existing yearly budget, then analyze every area to find where and how you can reduce costs for the coming year. You will probably find numerous things that can be trimmed from your budget with services and groceries being top of the list for savings so when you have cut back here and there, that money you have saved yourself can be used for other things including fun.

When we go shopping, most often we are in the ‘grab and go’ mode when really, we should be in the ‘look for a bargain’ mode. This is where frugal living comes in. Don’t think of frugal living as depriving your self.  Choosing a simpler lifestyle does not mean completely doing without, it merely means keeping a check on the spending, looking for cheaper ways of doing things, purchasing sale items as apposed to buying on impulse, being creative. We can live in the 21st century and still benefit from all that is on offer without being in debt. Always think twice before putting the item in your shopping trolley.
