On 16 November 2007, at 4:10pm, Sattahip Investigator, Police Lieutenant Colonel Phadungsak Sue-gamnurd was notified by Pra Kru Thamayarn Prayut, (57),, the abbot of Nong Jabtao Temple, Moo 5, Sattahip, Chonburi, that two monks and three lay people came to ask for a donation of five sets of monks’ robes for novices who were going to be ordained as monks for Father’s Day, 5 December 2007. They arrived in a blue Izusu Dragon “saloon” truck. Unfortunately, the abbot did not take note of the license plate number. The abbot, Pra Kru Thamayarn Prayut, agreed to donate the money to them. After the two monks and three laymen left, the abbot discovered more than 90,000 baht that he had put in a plastic box and hidden under the mattress was missing. He had noticed that there were two additional women waiting in the truck and thought that they were the same women who had already come to him, earlier, for a donation, as well.
Pra Kru Thamayarn related that on 3 November 2007, the people of Na Jomtien district had organized a religious ceremony in which yellow robes were presented to the monks. They also donated 100,000 baht, which he put in a plastic box and hid under the mattress. He had already used four thousand baht of the money for religious purposes. Then, on 15 November, at about 12am, a monk, along with three women and two men, came by to ask for a donation for Grang Samyod Temple, in Suphanburi Province. He gave them five hundred baht from the box and they went on their way.

In today’s incident (16 November), at about 12:30pm, two monks and three laymen stopped by to request a donation of five sets of monks’ robes for novices who were orphans and were going to be ordained at Sra-gaew Temple, Angthong Province, in celebration of the King’s birthday, which is on 5 December 2007. The abbot complied and gave them the money for the five sets of monks’ robes. While they were chatting, a layman paced around and went behind a cabinet that blocked off the bed. After the group of monks and laymen drove away, Pra Kru Thamayarn Prayut discovered that the box containing the money, which he had hidden under the mattress, was gone.

Police Lieutenant Colonel .Phadungsak Sue-gamnurd theorized that this criminal gang was going around cheating unsuspecting monks. There modus operandi is, apparently, to send someone to observe the monk’s movements and discover where money or property is kept, before coming back to strike. They use a lot of different people, including monks, to commit theses dastardly crimes. It is quite possible that many other abbots, from various temples, have had temple money or valuables taken in this matter. This, of course, causes serious repercussions to the temple and religion, in general. Hopefully, this evil gang will soon be apprehended and charged.
