Pattaya – On 28 January 2008, Lamchabang Police Lieutenant Chaichansakul was notified that there was a gas explosion in the vicinity of the UNITHAI Shipyard and Engineering Co., Ltd, located in Lamchabang Harbor. There were several serious injuries. Police Lieutenant Sirapong reported the information to his supervisor, Police Colonel Srihasak Soisri, Superintendent of Lamchabang, Chonburi, who commanded the police team to investigate the situation.

When the police officers arrived, the “Prateep Tahmsatan” Rescue Team was already tending to the wounded and transferring tem to Lamchabang Hospital. Six of the wounded were Mr. Sanee Watpoo, Mr. Adisorn Mongtha, Mr. Tahworn Kaawtrairat, Mr. Tawatchai Jaikwang, Mr. Pipop Leucha and Mr. Sanit Polbusaba. An additional three victims were sent to Aow U-dom Hospital: Mr. Jirasak Sakorn Jarion, Mr. Prapan Popolrat and Mr. Paitoon Kamprapa. Some of the victims sustained serious injuries and had to have their hearts electrically shocked. Others had broken legs with and serious burn injuries.

According to Mr. Supot Chaipong, the manager of the subcontracting company (PC. Co, Ltd.), there were three companies, working together, who were in charge of this area (mechanical bites). The section comprised twenty to thirty welders who were working in a workshop near the dockyard.

While the welders were working, there was a very fierce explosion and many people were injured and screamed for help. The injured were taken to the hospital.

Mr. Supot Chaipong, the manager, assumed that the accident was caused by leaking IC terrine gas, which was used for welding. The highly volatile gas was accumulating on the floor; and when sparks from the welding dropped on the floor, the gas ignited, causing the explosion.

As of press time, one of the injured, Mr. Sanit Polbubpa (32) succumbed to his injuries. Mr. Pipop and Mr. Prapan were transferred to Chonburi Hospital which is better equipped to deal with their injuries.

Lamchabang Superintendent, Police Colonel Srihasak Soisri, stated that this was a horrendous accident. Hundreds of tons of metal sheets bounced about one meter up from the floor. Police will question all concerned parties and press charges against careless operations, as warranted.
