London 16th August 2010: A homeless charity said that Eastern Europeans living in the UK are being left to fend for themselves if they lose their jobs with some sleeping rough. Homeless migrants from Eastern Europe living on London streets who do not qualify for benefits have become so impoverished that they are eating rats and drinking a lethal cocktail of alcoholic hand wash.

The Chief Executive of Thames Reach, one of UK’s biggest homeless charities, said he had been appalled by the conditions of destitute people from new EU states sleeping rough.  They make up more than a quarter of those on the streets of London. They have seen homeless Poles in north London barbecuing rats and have had to explain to them that the rats in London could be full of poison. The health risks are enormous.

Megan Stewart of Thames Reach outreach team found a site that was home to half a dozen polish and had visited on three occasions witnessing people eating cooked rats, which had either been roasted over a fire or boiled in a pot. The site was closed down in March.

Eastern European homeless are left to fend for themselves and unless they have worked full-time for a year, migrants from the 10 former eastern bloc countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007 do not qualify for housing benefits, which British homeless people can use to pay for hostels.

This leaves the homeless open to exploitation. The few men who were witnessed eating rats said they were employed by local off licenses to unload deliveries and were paid in bottles of super strong White Ace cider, a three liter bottle which contains 22 units of alcohol, more than five times the recommended daily limit for a man. Alcohol is a killer and hand wash fluid has been stolen from hospitals which is around 70% alcohol.

London’s director of housing said it was shocked to hear of the plight of the EU migrants but this only confirmed that “rough sleeping really is the worst option”. “It is clear that employment or returning home is a far better idea.” Around the Canary Wharf, half a dozen homeless live in squalor of rotting mattresses and pools of stinking water. All have similar stories of lost jobs and falling into a world of heavy drinking and rough sleeping.

One man from Poland aged 40 arrived in 2005. He bedded down under a flyover in East London saying that the local kids threw stones at him attacking him for no reason.  He has opted to go home along with 400 others who have returned in the last 18 months. If they were to stay it would cost the tax payers 250,000 as the homeless end up in E&A at least five times more than local residents and were 15 times more likely to become a victim of violence.
