Hollywoods 15 Most Expensive Divorces

Love may not cost a thing but, when things go sour, you can bet somebody‘s going to pay. We‘re taking a look at some high-profile Hollywood marriages that didn‘t quite go the distance - and left some stars owing a pretty penny.

1. Mel Gibson & Robyn Moore Though there has yet to be a settlement, we‘re keeping our eyes on Mel Gibson and Robyn Moore, since there‘s a good chance they could end up having the most expensive divorce in Hollywood history. The couple, who split after 28 years of marriage, never signed a prenup. Unfortunately for Mel‘s wallet, California law states that community property—which includes earnings—is divided 50/50. In 2006 Mel‘s worth was estimated at $900 million, which could leave Robyn with a settlement of a whopping $450 million. Now that‘s an expensive way to get into the history books!
2. Michael Jordan & Juanita Vanoy
Over the course of his 20-year marriage to Juanita Vanoy, Michael Jordan earned more than $350 million from his basketball contracts and endorsement deals. In 2002, Michael and Juanita filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, but they, er, reconciled shortly after. Four years later, they decided to end it for good, and Juanita walked away with $168 million, making their settlement the most expensive in entertainment history, according to Forbes. Can you say slam dunk?

3. Neil Diamond & Marcia Murphey
Neil Diamond married Marcia Murphey in 1969. Not long after, Neil became one of the most successful singers with huge hits like “Sweet Caroline” and “America.” In 1994, their love was on the rocks and Marcia filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Marcia got out of the relationship with an estimated $150 million. Neil said his ex was “worth every penny.”

4. Steven Spielberg & Amy Irving
Amy Irving married uber-director Steven Spielberg in 1985, after he already made E.T. and had the first Indiana Jones blockbuster under his belt. They split after almost four years together, and Amy contested their prenuptial agreement (which was written on a napkin) and won. She was awarded half of Steven’s fortune at the time—about $100 million.5. Harrison Ford & Melissa Mathison
After a 21-year marriage, Harrison Ford and wife Melissa Mathison went their separate ways. As a parting gift, Melissa took an estimated settlement of $85 million, plus a piece of the actor’s future earnings (negotiated by some sharp lawyers), including DVD sales of the Indiana Jones trilogy and The Fugitive.6. Kevin Costner & Cindy Silva
Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva married in 1978. Soon after, Kevin became a big-time leading man, making movies like Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and the Oscar favorite, Dances with Wolves. Kevin and his wife split in 1994, and because Cindy was married to Kev during his peak earning years, she was awarded $80 million in the settlement. It’s too bad for him that he didn’t make Waterworld first.

7. Madonna & Guy Ritchie
After ending their nearly eight-year marriage, Madonna and Guy Ritchie had to settle their affairs—and what a settlement they came to. Reports state that Madge’s payout to her director-hubby was between $76 and $92 million. Included in the sum was the couple’s home in England and their West London pub, The Punchbowl.

8. Paul McCartney & Heather Mills
Before they wed in 2002, Paul McCartney reportedly pooh-poohed Heather Mills’ suggestion that the two sign a prenuptial agreement. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Turns out that Heather needed a lot more than love, taking Paul for almost $60 million when their marriage tanked in 2006.

9. Kenny Rogers & Marianne Gordon
Country crooner Kenny Rogers may have taken a gamble—and lost—when he married fourth wife Marianne Gordon. When their union ended, Marianne went all in and took Kenny for somewhere between $40 and $60 million. You would think the singer would have been bitter after losing his shirt, but Ken told the press that Marianne “deserved it” for putting up with him. We guess it’s true what Kenny sings: “Every gambler knows the secret to surviving is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep.”10. James Cameron & Linda Hamilton
Linda Hamilton put in 18 months of marriage with director James Cameron and gave him one child before the union was terminated. The twosome married in 1997, just as James became “king of the world” with Titanic, raking in $100 mil’ for the flick. When they divorced in 1999, Linda, um, floated away with half of that.11. Michael Douglas & Diandra Luker
Michael Douglas married Diandra Luker only six weeks after meeting her at a party in 1977. Over the next few years, Michael became one of the box office’s top moneymakers. In 1998, amidst rumors of infidelities and alcohol abuse, the couple split. Diandra was awarded an estimated $45 million, plus homes in Beverly Hills and Majorca, Spain.

12. Johnny Carson & Joanna Holland
It wasn’t so funny when Johnny Carson and wife Joanna Holland split after 10 years. The two were involved in a pretty nasty divorce that lasted over three years. Though Johnny and his legal team put up their best fight, it was Joanna who came out on top, winning $20 million from her ex, plus their three homes in New York and one in California.

13. Bruce Springsteen & Julianne Phillips
Bruce Springsteen and actress Julianne Phillips were married from 1985 to 1988, when Bruce’s eye began to wander. He reportedly began an affair with bandmate Patti Scialfa (who’s now his wife), effectively ending their union. It wasn’t such a bad gig for Julianne, who took a nice payout of $20 million.

14. Lionel Richie & Diane Alexander
It’s easy to assume Lionel Richie wasn’t dancing on the ceiling when he had to fork over a nice piece of his earnings to his second ex-wife, Diane Alexander. Mrs. Richie No. 2 filed for divorce in 2004 and claimed she needed outrageous amounts of cash to continue the lavish lifestyle she was living, which included a monthly clothing allowance of $15,000; $50,000 a month for manicures, massages and other personal services; and an annual plastic surgery budget of $20,000. Lionel ultimately paid Diane about $20 million in alimony.

15. Mick Jagger & Jerry Hall
Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall were together for 22 years, but only married for nine when Jerry found out that the Rolling Stones front man fathered a child with another woman. The model filed for divorce in 1999, and though Mick was worth an estimated $325 million at the time, Jerry walked away from the relationship with just a smidgen of the cash—somewhere between $15 to $25 million.
