Holding up the Project of Beach Expansion

Pattaya City slowed down the project pumping sand to expand the area of the beach, due to the fact that feasibility of such expansion is still questioning the uncertainty. Many involved have proposed to construct barrage along the line of expanded beach, however Environmental issues still have to be considered. Finally Possibility Analysis Specialists hired before continuing on the project and making improvements to the area.

10.00am, 27 October 2005, at Pattaya City Hall Conference room, Mr. Pichet Uthaiwattananon, Director of Mechanical Department, stated in the conference among governmental unit leaders that the policy to expand the beach by pumping off sand from area around Pattya Bay and filling the beach area in order to improve its attractiveness and to make it perpetual, with the coordination of Regional Habour Department, resulted that it is possible, yet the duration of the expanded area might not be stable due to erosion by waves and tides. Furthermore, after pumping out sand from the area, it creates a concave basin where probably later sand from filled beach will slip back into and waste the budget for nothing.

However, to build a barrier or “Key Lock” to keep the filled site stablility is the way to make the project feasible, but in building anything to stop natural occurrences, it will surely be opposed by Environmentalists.

As the consequence of an uncertainty, Mr. Nirant explained the reasons to slow down the project for a while, and Pattaya has already hired Consultant Company to analyze the possibility or feasibility to expand the area of beach. And Pattaya has budgeted 50 million baht for this project in 2006 which will make better of Pattaya Beach, filling over 50,000 cubic meters of sand where formerly eroded to revive those beauties back.
