Upon arrival at Chinatown, the queen and the princess worshipped the world’s biggest Golden Buddha image at Wat Traimitr.

They later went to Chalermphrakiat Gate, Odeon Circle, to preside over the opening ceremony of the Bangkok Chinatown Festival 2012, marking the Year of Dragon.

On the occasion of the Chinese Lunar New Year, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Guan Mu and China’s Vice Culture Minister Li Xiaojie, on behalf of the Chinese government, also expressed well wishes and gave special souvenirs to Her Majesty the Queen and the princess at the event.

Apart from marking Chinese New Year, the festival also marks a continuing celebrating of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 7th cycle birthday on Dec 5, 2011 as well as Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 80th birthday on Aug 12, 2012.

After the inauguration, Queen Sirikit and the princess visited the Tian Fa Hospital Foundation and booths of other organisations participating in this special event as well as viewing related cultural street shows along Yaowarat Road amid the mass of subjects greeting them.

The Tian Fa Hospital foundation presented a three-inch high golden dragon figure made of 99.99 per cent gold to the queen as her birthday present.

The queen and the princess then proceeded to Wat Leng Noei Yi or Wat Mangkorn Kamalawas Temple to make merit and pay homage to the Chinese gods.

The Lunar Chinese New Year is one of the most important occasions in Thailand, particularly among ethnic Chinese Thai people who paid homage to their ancestors and packed at shrines to seek blessings for happiness and prosperity.
