Hip Hip Hooray!

Mary MacDougal groaned. Her dodgy Hip was killing her. The Painkillers didn’t help much anymore. The sprightly 60 year old lady living in Richmond, Surrey, UK had been waiting for a NHS Hip replacement. Operation for over two depressing years

Well, still no surgical appointment at the local hospital to look forward to. At times she said, she wished that she was dead. She often took it out on her husband Jack, and their 37yr marriage was showing signs of falling apart.

Then one afternoon she had a call from Alice, an old school friend. That call was to change Mary’s life……

Alice came round for Tea a few days later. She was the same age as Mary, but she looked terrific!

  “Been on Holiday?” asked Mary.
“Well, sort of, I went to Pattaya in Thailand, for a new Knee Joint” Said Alice with a smile.
“ Gosh, bet that cost a bomb” said Mary.
“No it didn’t actually. My daughter paid for it”
explained Alice.

Alice Dangerfield, had followed in the sometimes painful, footsteps of those who are now called Medical Tourists.
Medical Tourism is nothing new. In the recent past it was frowned upon by Doctors who claimed that, although you may be able to get early treatment abroad, at a low low price, you were taking a chance. Foreign countries do not always train Medical Doctors up to the highest International Standards they said.

But there is virtually no danger involved, if patients attend such reputable institutions as The Bangkok Pattaya Hospital in Pattaya. For it is a Universally accepted Center of Excellence, in the World of State-of–the-Art Medical Treatment and Care.( There are other Hospitals also, in the area, that provide very good facilities and care.)

The Bangkok Pattaya Hospital’s Mission is to provide medical Treatment at an International Tertiary level. To concentrate on Professional Ethics and Patient satisfaction.

Such is it’s burgeoning reputation, that an ever increasing number of ‘Health tourists’ attend there every year. It can be said that whatever, is wrong with you, they can fix-it. Within the bounds of possibility of course…….

It’s famous Heart Center for example, represents the pinnacle of Cardiac Care in the Eastern World. The Cosmetic Surgery department is equally renowned.
As is the large Dental Treatment department.
Other specialties include – Neurology, Neurosurgery
Oncology, Ophthalmology, Pheumatology, Endocrinology, Pediatrics, Nephrology, Gynecology, Pulmonology, Psychiatry etc etc.

Accommodation in a single private room with every luxury, is equal to most 5 star Hotels, and a nurse is always in close proximity.

Food, often where some hospitals fall short, is excellent. Every Nationality is catered for, and what you ordered from the extensive menu,, will arrive just when you want it.

They will even get your Visa renewed if it is in danger of running out!.Nothing is too much trouble…….Naturally, all this must be paid for. But the bill will only be a fraction of what US and European Hospitals expect.

True to say, that wherever you go for treatment in this part of Thailand you will find Doctors and Nurses dedicated to your welfare, and cure. But for sure you will be the recipient of something money cannot buy – kindness. Thais are a kind people, and
never more so, than when looking after a person who is sick.

So what happened to dear old Mary MacDougal? Well, her husband Jack, cashed-in his British Airways shares, and took her to a top hospital in Pattaya for a new Hip.
As expected, everything went according to plan, and today, fully mobile and pain free, Mary is back on the beloved Golf Course and beating Jack like in the old days. “Hip Hip Hooray” her friends will yell as she drives one, right on to the Green.
“To think I suffered all that time, waiting for the NHS to do the job, when I should have gone to good old Thailand in the first place” She told us.

Footnote: Medical Tourism is fine as long as you go to a reputable place for treatment. There are people in Thailand, and in other lands, who are guilty of negligence, malpractice and making exaggerated claims, and getting compensation if something goes wrong, is virtually impossible.
Your own Doctor should be able to guide you in the right direction as will BUPA and other overseas Health Insurance companies.
