Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s leap into the 2008, “I‘m in. And I‘m in to win,‘‘

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s leap into the 2008 presidential race Saturday sets up a high-priced, high-profile political melee that could make California, working to move its primary up to February, the decisive contest in the campaign for the Democratic nomination.

“I’m in. And I’m in to win,” was the simple announcement Clinton posted on her campaign Web site Saturday morning. The long-expected announcement was a low-key opening to her historic effort to become the country’s first female president and return to the White House where she spent eight years as first lady.

In a video aimed at her supporters across the nation, the former first lady said that she was forming an exploratory committee for a presidential run, although she made it clear she wasn’t just testing the waters.

“I want you to join me not just for the campaign, but for a conversation about the future of our country,” she said. “And I am forming my exploratory committee because I believe that together we can bring the leadership that this country needs.”

Clinton’s announcement probably will cement her spot as the front-runner in the scramble for the Democratic presidential nomination, both in California and across the nation. In a national Gallup Poll taken last week, 29 percent of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents said they would be most likely to vote for Clinton in 2008, compared with 18 percent who backed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who announced his own exploratory committee last week. Obama is an African American newcomer with enormous appeal to many Democrats.
