Hezbollah Fires New Weapon

Hezbollah launched their potentially most destructive missile yet. The new missile penetrated further into Israel than any other rocket has during this conflict.

Three missiles loaded with 220 pounds of explosives were fired at the town of Afula yesterday. The missiles contained nearly five times the explosives that the standard Hezbollah missiles carry.

Luckily the missiles landed in an empty field and no casualties were reported.

Hezbollah said on its television network, Al-Manar, that it fired a new, longer range rocket called Khaybar-1. The new rocket’s full capabilities are still unclear.

According to Israeli police, at least five Hezbollah rockets landed near the town of Afula.

Since the conflict started, Hezbollah guerillas have fired mainly Russian-designed rockets called Katusha rockets. These highly mobile rockets pack 49 pounds of explosives and have hit Afula in the past.

The Israeli military did not know what the other rockets were and said only that they were not Iranian-made Zilzals, which have a longer range than Katyushas.

Hezbollah and Israel continued pounding each other yesterday. Lebanese based fighters sent more than 80 rockets into Israel. Israel responded by striking 110 targets in Lebanon.

With all the intense fighting, the Israeli government is wary of sending in more troops that may fall into a possible Lebanese militant trap.

“Israel is going to do it at our own pace, at our own time, to make sure that when we go in, we go in carefully, and that we don‘t walk into their booby traps,” Israeli government spokeswoman Miri Eisin said. “We want to stop the rocket fire, but we also want to make sure that Hezbollah will not be there afterward.”

“Not only do they have a terrorist army, but they are sort of waiting for us to come in,” she said. “They have booby-trapped the entire area. They want us to walk into those booby traps.”
