Hellhound On His Trail by Hampton Sides

The stalking of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the international hunt for his assassin have created this story of all the characters involved in the murder of Martin Luther King Junior. It is well researched and wonderfully written with Hampton Sides having traveled miles through the towns and over routes in a great effort to talk with every neighbour and witness, making it a fascinating and well documented read on historical events, but reading like a thriller.

The chapter’s are short, easy to read and keeps the imagination going with the frequent changes of scenes and characters to keep the readers interest at a peak. It begins with the prison break by James Earl Ray then moves on to King and his group. This book is laden with passages that have never before been revealed. James Earl Ray is described as a low life loser and petty criminal who was rather a shy person.  The description of Rays’ life on the run jump out from the pages with its seedy whore houses and fluffy beds. Odors from a downstairs grill wafting up the stairs to the bedrooms.

The book gives details of J Edgar Hoovers’ distrust toward Martin Luther King and Johnson’s rudeness. By the time you come to the end of the book, you find yourself not wanting to take sides with anyone. The book reveals a considerable amount of information about Dr. King. How he managed to keep going on a daily basis when he was on a near collapse of his marriage and the threats that always befell him is amazing. There is no doubt about the hatred of Dr King by the government, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Hoover and Wallace. He was loathed by numerous people, representing a clear threat.

James Earl Ray was no angel, but did not come across as more than a bank robber. All the evidence against him made him appear a horrible racist who struck down Dr. King on his own, but he does not come across as a racist hatemonger or murderer. Dr King’s family do not believe Ray had any hand in his assignation and if this is so, there must be some very compelling evidence out there that casts doubt to the whole episode.

This book comes highly recommended for those of you who are fans of history and fascinated by the FBI and its’ people. It is well worth reading to capture a sense of the issues that tore the country apart in those terrible days.
