Paichit Varachit, Permanent Secretary for Public Health, said of the 16 people who died from the new flu, 11 had congenital diseases.

The spread of the outbreak among students has diminished as the number of new patients aged between 6-20 years has decreased, indicating that the measures against the virus in school are effective, Dr Paichit said.

However, it’s likely that the outbreak has worsened among workers, labourers and farmers in the provinces, so preventive measures need to be geared up in local communities.

Meanwhile, Dr Vichai Chokevivat, Chairman of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) said production of the trial H1N1 vaccine is expected to finish on Wednesday.

The first round of clinical trials on human subjects is expected on September 24. Twenty four volunteers will be injected with vaccine twice. The second round of vaccine trials will be conducted among 400 people.

Meanwhile, the GPO has stockpiled the anti-viral drug Zanamivir and will distribute the drug to government hospitals on Wednesday.

The drug will be used to treat patients contracting Influenza Type A(H1N1) in case of resistance to Oseltamivir, the anti-viral drug used to treat patients at the moment. (TNA)
