Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Pt1 – Almost The End Of An Era

“It’s Harry’s last chance to solve the Voldemort problem once and for all,” proclaims Daniel Radcliffe (Harry). “It really brings home the magnitude of the sacrifice that Hermione and Ron make for Harry and their friendship says an increasingly attractive Emma Watson (Hermione). Bereft of help, it’s up to the three youthful white magi to bring the evil Voldemort down, cast over a 140-minute essentially slow moving adventure, largely removed from the school, unlike the other six HP movies.

This is the scenario of the penultimate Harry Potter film – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt1. (Almost) ‘The Finale of the Worldwide Phenomenon’ as the film’s trailer has it. The actual finale will come out in July,2011, so it’s not quite over for the now famous trio.

Whilst the previous six Harry Potter movies retained a sense of warmth and humour to accompany the eternal battle of good against evil, this one is pure devilry and gothic horror, set amidst classic haunted landscapes of . The title is somewhat of an enigma, though. Does it refer to 1) a holy personage, 2) a loud shout or cry to incite dogs in the chase or 3) the parts of a hare given to the hounds after a successful chase? No one seems to know.

What is apparent is that the filmmakers increasingly try to emulate the stunning effects and twists of Lord of the Rings, but essentially fail, not least because the latter was written by a maestro and actually depicts the truth according to some esoteric cognoscenti, whereas HP is pure make believe, even if is the highest grossing film series of all time, with over $5.4 billion in worldwide receipts.

Briefly, the plot is this: after unexpected events at the end of the previous year, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are entrusted with a quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s secret to immortality – the Horcruxes. It is supposed to be their final year at Hogwarts, but the collapse of the Ministry of Magic and Voldemort’s rise to power prevents them from attending. The trio undergo a long adventure with many obstacles in their path including Death Eaters, Snatchers, the mysterious Deathly Hallows and Harry’s connection with the Dark Lord’s mind becoming ever stronger.

The majority of the critics maintain it doesn’t quite match up to the previous six HP movies, but perhaps that’s expecting too much for what is essentially abridging movie, the finale, one hopes will make up for Part 1’s shortcomings. Some claim it’s hardly distinguishable from the six before, but personally, I think it’s well worth going to see, though, if only for the effects, preferably at the MMX cinema at Central Festival.
