Pattaya, Oct31, 2010, [Pattaya Daily News] Mr. Pong aka Gampon Tongplub, dread host of  the TV “Shock Show”, was the guest of honour at a City Hall publicity press conference, Oct26, to encourage Pattaya folk and tourist guests to celebrate the 2010 Halloween Festival at the special venue, where they are likely to be ‘freaked out’ of their skulls.

“Our welcome guests, tourists from afar, needn’t be afraid of missing out on the annual preternatural experience,” Mr Pong told PDN. “The celebration is for their benefit and for Pattaya’s people.”

“The Halloween Festival had a great response last year and with the recent economic and political crises in Thailand, the tourism industry badly needs a boost to catch up from the recent slow months,” Mayor Ittipon Khunpleum, the press conference chairman, told PDN.

Meanwhile, those considering going up to Bangkok for a wider Halloween experience can do so without trepidation, as Governor of Bangkok, Sukhumban Paribatra, unveils the ‘Monkey Cheek’, an ingenious flood control system due to come on line on Oct31 to make Bangkok safer.

“The name is inspired by monkeys that usually overeat. Excess food is stored in their cheeks, making their cheeks bulge. When they are hungry, later, they can eat the food in their cheeks, “Mr. Sukhumban told PDN.

‘Monkey Cheeks’ is holding system consisting of 21 container tanks holding rainwater. The system can accommodate excess rain water up to 30 million c.c. to later provide drinking and tap water for the citizens of Bangkok in the rainy season.

Bangkok currently faces the threat of a combination of seasonal high tides, a swollen Chao Praya River fed by Northern run-offs, and continuing rain. At its lowest level, the capital is located only one meter below sea level.

“The Flood control system has been developed by Bangkok after the city suffered a severe flood 27 years ago. At that time, Bangkok was submerged for almost three months, “said Mr. Paribatra.

However, thanks to ‘Monkey Cheeks’, the decades-old collection system originally inspired by HM Bhumibol Adulyadej,  Bangkok may be able to handle the rising tide.

‘Monkey Cheeks’ will be supported by the 75 Km-long levee running along the water channels to drain the water overflowing from the Chao Phraya River.
