Barcelona, the 1st of March 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Track testing for the 2010 Formula One season has officially concluded in Barcelona on Sunday, with former champion Hamilton posting the fastest track time. Further confirming that this season will be one of the closest run battles yet, the Ferrari and Red Bull cars came in just 0.067 of a second behind the McLaren.

On the final day of testing, all teams got the opportunity to test varying fuel workloads, namely, low-fuel qualifying laps and full race simulations. Hamilton came in a fraction of a second faster than Red Bull’s Mark Webber whilst Ferrari’s Felipe Massa came in third. Remarkably, Adrian Sutil came in forth with the Force India car, showing that they will remain competitive in the new season, running with Mercedes manufactured engines.

Sutil was pleased with the performance , stating: “I feel like this was the first proper test day for me. We did our long race simulation, and I think we can be quite happy and confident. The pace was good, the tire life was very good, and I was able to run a lot of laps on both the soft and the hard tires without any problems so both compounds seem to be working really well for us. Also the qualifying simulation went well. Speed-wise the car is competitive, and we have to show it in Bahrain now.”

Red Bull racing gave both their drivers time on track with Sebastian Vettel taking the morning run before Mark Webber impressed in the afternoon. Although conditions were said to be more favourable in the later run, Vettel still managed to post a competitive time, finishing 5th for the day ahead of returning former champion Michael Schumacher who placed sixth in his Mercedes GP car.

Schumacher gave some insight to reporters, stating: “The four testing days here in Barcelona have helped us to make significant progress with the MGP W01, and I am feeling quite confident for the start of the season. It is always difficult to read too much into testing but knowing our program, it is fair to say that the times did not always reflect the true picture.

“We have worked through many setup and development evaluations this week and gained valuable information to study before Bahrain. We are heading to the first race with a good feeling and we know that we will have our upgrades there. But most of all we know that our prospects for even the first races are looking very reasonable now.”
