Pattaya, the 31st of August 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Having reported to Pattaya Police Station on the 28th of August following the incident, Mr. Porter has since returned to provide further information about the incident and the woman involved. Thanks to police records and Mr. Porter’s memory of the incident, officers have now obtained a positive identification of the offender.

Mr. Porter in his original report, while under the influence of a strong dosage of sleeping tablets, stated that he had met a local working girl on Walking Street before being drugged and robbed by her at his nearby hotel room.

It is now known that the pair in fact met at the ‘Insomnia Disco TK’ (nightclub) on Walking Street, drinking alcohol for several hours before going back to Mr. Porter’s room at the S.T. Court in South Pattaya. Prior to returning to the room, the offender allegedly purchased two iced coffee’s from a local 7-Eleven, which she then drugged before handing to Mr. Porter back at the hotel room.

Following Mr. Porter’s incapacitation, the offender went about stealing all of his possessions including, a gold bracelet [worth 150,000 Baht] a gold Necklace [worth 100,000 Baht] a digital camera [Olympus], Bt200,000 in cash, his passport and hotel room key.

Due to the prevalence of this type of incident, officers have compiled a shortlist of wanted offenders, which was subsequently shown to Mr. Porter upon his reporting back to the Pattaya Police Station. From the criminal database Mr. Porter was able to positively identify the offender, explaining that he was “100% sure” that it was her.

Police have now begun investigations into the whereabouts of the offender, believed to be a ‘freelance’ working girl operating in Pattaya’s Walking Street.

Editor’s note: This type of crime, regardless of the outcome, will never cease to exist in Pattaya. Most cases involve tourists on relatively short stays and working girls from everywhere in Thailand. Even if the offender is caught, most flee to their home provinces until the ‘heat cools down’ or they run out of money, the victim will not or cannot stay to fight their case in court, which even in minor incidents can take up to one year to complete.

No regular holidaying tourist is able to put their life on hold to for such a time as to complete a case, which may not even lead to a positive outcome (get their money and/or possession returned).

Authorities will of course follow through with investigations, however if the offender is caught, she will almost certainly deny the allegations, which is at times prompted by certain ‘external’ influences. When the victim then inevitably departs the country, the case fades away and is often resolved (a deal is done) before proceeding to court.

Severe overcrowding of the Thai prison system and the aforementioned ‘benefits’ involved with such cases, mean almost all of the offenders never see the inside of a cell and often ‘re-offend’ given the opportunity.
