US, the 9th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: This most recent ‘taser’ incident comes after a teenage spectator detained in a similar fashion recently whilst at a Major League baseball game. The increased use of tasers on the community by police and security personnel is becoming increasingly controversial, with medical professionals citing the significant health and safety risks and unknowns that are presented if an electric shock is inflicted on someone both intermittently and constantly.

In the case of the ‘rowdy’ golfing spectator, who was apparently heckling a player repetitively on the 11th hole at the TPC Sawgrass Players Championship event, police used a stun gun to restrain the man after he refused to comply with police orders and resisted arrest.

According to Sergeant Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, “After asking him [the offender] several times to cease [his heckling] or leave the course, he was told he was being placed under arrest. Again he resisted when officers put their hands on him. So he was given what we call a ‘drive stun’ where the cartridge is removed from the device. It’s similar to the old stun gun and is a pain compliance technique.”

An incident report yet to be completed by the local sheriff’s office, Sgt. Mulligan has however made it known that the offender will likely be charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

In a statement from the PGA Tour administrators regarding the incident they advised: “Anything that disrupts the competition or the enjoyment of our fans will be dealt with accordingly, as was the case today.”

Note: The United Nations has recently condemned the use of tasers by law enforcement and prison officers, warning against the increased possibility of death in certain cases. In addition, both Amnesty International and The American Civil Liberties Union have also stated their objections to the use of tasers after medical research indicated various dangers posed to excessively stunned test patients. Amnesty international cited the continued use of stun guns and electronic shock weapons by American law enforcement officers amounted to a form of legally justified torture.
