Ghanaian Man Drowns In Sea Off Pattaya Beach

A 32-year-old Ghanaian man who was seen walking on the pontoons on Pattaya beach was knocked into the sea by a wave and drowned. His body washed up on the beach 6 hours later.

PATTAYA – August 10, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 9.00 p.m., Pol.Sub.Lt. Kwanchai Namkhanisorn (Inquiry official on duty of Pattaya city police station) was notified by tourists that there was a corpse of a male foreigner floating in the sea opposite the Tropicana hotel, Soi 6, Pattaya beach road, Moo 9 Tambon Nong Prue, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province, so he coordinated with the sea rescuers of Pattaya city and the rescuers of Sawang Boriboon Tharmma Satharn Foundation, Pattaya city, to rush to inspect at scene.

 

At the incident the officers found the corpse of a coloured male foreigner. He was only wearing black sweatpants. The corpse was identified as a Mr. Francis Kofi Frimpong, aged 32, Ghanaian nationality. Miss Kannika Somphrai, aged 25, who was his Thai girlfriend, was sitting crying beside the corpse.

 

Upon questioning Miss Kannika, she told the police that before incident occurred she and her boyfriend had come from Bangkok to Pattaya city but Mr. Francis Kofi Frimpong (her boyfriend) had walked down to swim in the sea alone and let her sleep in their room. After 3-4 hours he hadn’t returned so she went out to look for him along the beach and asked a beach trampoline owner and he told her that he saw Mr. Francis Kofi Frimpong was walking on the pontoon but after that he had not seen him anymore. Miss Kannika then informed the rescuers of Sawang Boriboon Tharmma Satharn Foundation and the frogmen to assist to find her Ghanaian boyfriend. At 9.00 p.m. she was informed by the officers that they had found the body of a foreign man on the beach so she rushed to the and saw that it was her boyfriend.

 

Initially, the officers assumed that the deceased had climbed onto the pontoon to walk along it but was tossed into the sea by the waves and drowned. The police gave the corpse to Sawang Boriboon Tharmma Satharn Foundation in order to send it for an autopsy at the Institute Of Forensic Medicine, Police General Hospital.
