South Africa, the 26th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Ghana shocked the United States in a 2-1 extra-time win to keep African interest in the World Cup alive in their last-16 clash in Rustenburg. Ghana’s progression is the first time the Black Stars have made it to the last eight at a World Cup.

Kevin-Prince Boateng put the Black Stars ahead with an individual effort in the 5th minute before the USA fought back through a Landon Donovan effort in the 62nd. Entering extra-time Ghana looked the liveliest, rewarded for their determination when Asamoah Gyan scored his third of the tournament to give the African an unlikely victory.

Uruguay reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 40 years with an impressive 2-1 victory over South Korea in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The Korean performance was epitomised by a sleepy start which allowed the Uruguayans to take the lead.

Luis Suarez gave his side an eighth-minute game changer with S. Korea; similar to the Ghana v USA match, equalising through a Lee Chung-yong effort. In driving rain, Suarez capped an impressive Uruguay performance scoring his second with an impressive strike in the 80th minute sending the South American through to the quarters.

Tonight’s matches will see two entertaining fixtures; England v Germany and Argentina v Mexico. Both matches will see the demise of a team thought to be heavily in contention for this year’s title.
