South Africa, the 3rd of July 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Germany were quick off the mark at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town courtesy of a Thomas Mueller header from a Bastian Schweinsteiger free kick in the 3rd minute. Argentina were exposed at back numerous times in the first half despite their flare and enthusiasm in going forward. The score remained at 1-0 going into the break with the Argentines backed to come out invigorated by Coach Diego Maradona.

Argentina looked to start the second period with determination, dominating possession and creating several goal-scoring opportunities. However, Germany, playing their renowned brand of counterattacking football hit Argentina with a second blow courtesy of a Miroslav Klose finish. Arne Friedrich got his first international goal at the age of 31 following an absolute shambolic display of defence from the South Americans before Klose capped a brace to give the Germans a 4-0 win.

Spain setup a mouth-watering World Cup semi final against Germany on Saturday with an edgy 1-0 win over tournament highfliers Paraguay at Ellis Park. In a close match, which saw both sides miss a penalty opportunity, Spain’s David Villa was the hero on the night scoring his fifth goal of the finals.

The European Champions were easily the lesser team in the first half as the South American created a host of opportunities, including having a seemingly legitimate Nelson Valdez goal disallowed. The second half started bleakly for both teams before in successive passages of play, Oscar Cardozo and then Alonso, had penalties denied by some on-edge goalkeeping. Spain eventually broke the deadlock and took the win in the 83rd minute with a David Villa strike that hit both posts before settling in the back of the net.

Following a two-day break from World Cup action, the first match of the semi final will take place between Uruguay and Holland before Wednesday’s match between Germany and Spain.
