German Victim Of Torture And Assault – The Real Story

Following an interview with Mr Michel Spindler (his correct surname), who was recently, detained, tortured and assaulted by members of a motorbike‘group going by the name of the Lone Brothers MC Club, Pattaya Daily News is now able to reveal the whole story.

The Lone Brothers is a group of motorcycle enthusiasts, largely composed of Germans with two Swiss members, that Mr Michel was, until recently, also a member of. The group or ‘family’ also has affiliations in Cambodia and Australia. The group meets on a regular basis on Wednesdays in Naklua Soi18 to party and generally indulge in drinking sessions and sometimes to go on motorbike tours.

Lone Brothers MC. , this motorcycle group has a formal organization, with rules and regulations. The members first join as prospective members, before becoming full members, when they have to pay Bt10,000 followed by monthly payments of Bt1,000. The Wednesday meets started at 7pm, only being for full ‘family’ members and sometimes prospects, and then at 8pm it is open house with anyone being welcome. Following the group meets, the average number of 10 members and prospects would go on to a bar in Soi 6 at about 11pm, to drink and enjoy the female company.

The leader, Gabriel, PDN discovered, is somewhat of a power-freak and also, it transpires, a wife-beater who apparently made the life of Lee, his Thai wife, a misery and is also insanely jealous, so much so that she attempted to run away from him at least 20 times. However, as she essentially had no other place to go to, she returned, once again to put herself at the mercy of Gabriel, who continued to abuse her.

Michel originally met Gabriel three years ago in February, 2007 and had generally found him friendly and very helpful. However, at one or two of the after-club sessions in the bar in Soi 6, Michel had seen Gabriel become ‘heavy’ with one or two people and throw his weight around. Michel became a prospective member of the Lone Brothers MC Club in June, 2007 and a full member on January, 2010.

It was towards the end of August, after one of these abuse sessions that Ms Lee decided to seek the solace and perhaps protection of Michel and went round to his residence.

Now, whether as an inducement or because she felt attracted to Michel, who was alone at the time, virtually as soon as she entered his door she removed her clothes and they subsequently had sex.

This was eight months ago and they only had sex the one time, however, Michel felt guilty about the incident and on several occasions came near to confessing to Gabriel that he had had sex with his wife.

Somehow, Gabriel came to know of the sexual incident between Lee and Michel. It is surmised that Lee may have admitted to it either through anger or because Gabriel forced her to confess. Anyway, Gabriel, deeply suspicious, had several times confronted Michel, asking him directly whether or not he had had sex with Lee, but Michel denied it when asked. Gabriel apparently also constantly sent accusatory text-messages to Michel and even phoned him, sometimes on a daily basis accusing him, but Michel continued to deny it. Michel continued to felt guilty about the incident, however, and after numerous conscience-wrestling sessions, eventually decided to confess to Gabriel and so clear the air, because, although he had seen Gabriel get heavy in the Soi 6 bar on several occasions, he believed that Gabriel would adopt a rational approach.

After one of the gang’s Wednesday meets, on March 10, 2010, Gabriel, who sells motorbikes and who had sold one to Michel in August, 2009, asked Michel if he would like to complete the payments on his bike, a matter of Bt50,000. It was then that Michel summoned up the courage to confess. Gabriel appeared to take the news in his stride, asking only that Michel come two days later with the money. He did, however, phone Michel later and asked him not only to bring the Bt50,000, but also another Bt70,000, effectively in compensation for sleeping with his wife, a bar fine, so to speak, to which Michel agreed, even though it meant he would have to borrow money from a friend.

In the interim, Gabriel summonsed the five core members of the gang, and two others, unbeknown to Michel, to come to his house in Sukhumvit Soi 73, evidently in a planned demonstration of his power, as he liked to ‘lord it’ over his acolytes and also as a warning to the others never to cross him.

Michel subsequently turned up at Gabriel’s house, early at about 10am. He was asked to put the Bt120,000 on a table and the bike keys and as soon as he did, Gabriel, who has one leg shorter than the other and wears one shoe with a compensatory reinforced heel, then took of this shoe and proceeded to hit Michel severely over the head at least three times with it. When Michel asked why Gabriel had taken the motorbike back when he had paid him the money, Gabriel replied that Michel’s life was no longer his own, indeed absolutely everything he owned now belonged to Gabriel, including his bike, house, restaurant and even his wife, Diana!

At about 10.30am, the other four, Manfred Decker, Heinz Adam, Peter Marzog, Sven Vehma and another anonymous member who has since ‘turned in his jacket’ and left the club, turned up at the house and with Gabriel’s encouragement, then ganged up on Michel and started beating him up. Two other prospects were also there, but didn’t participate. This effectively went on for seven hours spasmodically, during which, the other five core members became progressively drunker and considerably more aggressive on the alcohol that Gabriel had earlier sent out for. One of the core member who was particularly interested in upping the ante, Manfred, has earlier gone outside to warm up his chopper motorbike, and when it was sufficiently hot, had forced Michel’s arm onto the exhaust pipe, inflicting grave burns.

Gabriel at one stage asked the others what they should do with Michel. The core members argued among themselves about what heinous measures they could adopt, like shackling Michel in ankle-irons, but Gabriel eventually told Michel to ring  his wife, Diana, and to tell her that Gabriel now wanted a ransom of Bt20,000. During this call, Gabriel wrenched the phone from Michel’s hand and told Diana that if she didn’t bring it, Michel would be killed.

Gabriel also told Diana that Michel had had sex with Lee, which she hadn’t previously known. She now understood the reason for Gabriel’s vindictiveness. During the phone call Diana could hear the sounds of the pain that the gang were inflicting on Michel. Altogether five phone calls were made to Diana, who by this time was becoming increasingly concerned. In some of these calls Michel spoke to Diana, but he was denied this right towards the end.

Diana even tried to phone other members that she knew were present, but all refused to speak to her. Diana eventually rang Thomas, a friend of Michel’s and also a member of the same gang, telling him of Michel’s predicament, asking him to help which he did by going round to the house and interceding with the members to try and get them to stop beating up Michel, at one point angrily asking how it took seven of them to beat up one defenseless guy. Thomas then left, promising to return later.

The anonymous gang member at this stage began to feel sorry for Michel and suggested he go to the toilet to wash the blood off his face, head and fingers, which had become injured trying to protect his head from blows. Michel managed to get hold of his phone, on the way to the toilet, because all the others were distracted. When safely in the toilet, Michel then phoned the police asking for help.

The police arrived, but initially treated the case as a domestic incident, perhaps because Michel told them he didn’t want to press charges. He did, however, ask to be taken to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, where he thought he’d be able to use his medical insurance, which was initially refused as they disputed the circumstances leading to his injuries, eventually ending up at the Banglamung Hospital. Michel stayed overnight. During the night, however, he began to become paranoid and fearful for his life and when a close friend came to see him the following day and he expressed his fear, the friend offered to take him to a safe house where he now is.

Shortly after Michel’s lawyer, Pim, after a discussion with Michel, decided to press charges and went to report the matter to Banglamung Police. They, however, had their time taken up dealing with the Red Shirts and didn’t have time to apply for an arrest warrant. After two more days, becoming increasingly more frustrated, Pim went to the court and applied for an arrest warrant, herself, taking the matter to the Immigration Police, instead, who subsequently arrested the four gang members, Gabriel Frey, Manfred Decker, Heinz Adam, and Peter Marzog, have been detained and are now awaiting trial, but the other core member, Sven Vehma,42, is still at large. The anonymous member renounced his membership of the club in disgust and later rang Michel to apologize for his part in the affair.

Michel and Diana have been brought close together by this affair, but have closed the restaurant and intend to leave Thailand to return to Germany as soon as possible.
