FTI Supports PM’s Bid to Head Economic Team

Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) chairman Santi Vilassakdanont on Tuesday expressed support for newly-elected Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva‘s stated intention to head his government‘s economic team, saying the premier-elect could make decisions on his own if he joined a meeting of the team.

Bangkok, the 17th of December 2008 [TNA]: He said although the economic team is composed of members of many political parties, it could make a quick decision if members jointly discussed with each other in such a meeting.

Mr. Santi said he also agreed with the proposed idea of inviting non-members of parliament to help with economic affairs so that problems could be addressed swiftly. The FTI chief suggested what the new government should do urgently is to restore confidence among local and foreign investors within the next three to four months to stimulate private consumption and investment.

It must attempt to accelerate rebuilding tourism and have a clear policy to penetrate into the Chinese, Japanese, European and South Korean markets.

More importantly, the government must emphasise encouraging national reconciliation to reduce ongoing social conflict, accelerating annual budget spending and increase the mid-year budget of Bt100 billion to a higher level. (TNA)
