The discovery was made after paramedics were called to her house by worried neighbours in the town of Bessan, near Beziers, who were concerned about the 54-year-old’s deteriorating health.

When they entered the flat, they found 87 dogs living on the property, in various states of health, as well as the dead bodies of 20 to 30 dead dogs in various stages of decomposition.

The neighbours, who had previously put up with the constant barking of dogs from the 54-year-old’s property, were still surprised to find quite how many dogs were on the premises.

They had also complained that the air around the property had been foul smelling for years, but were once again sidelined by the assumption that it was just a bad water retention tank near the house.

They eventually became concerned for the woman’s welfare, calling paramedics after they thought she was severely malnourished.

It was only after the paramedics came that the neighbours made the grim discovery.

Neighbour Paulette Bourdelois told French newspaper Midi Libre: ‘She needed food for her dogs and for her.

‘So I took her some food but did not go in the house.’

She later asked a friend of the woman to help her ton the house the following day.

‘As soon as the door opened I called the emergency services.’

One neighbour said: ‘We knew she had dogs but not as many as this.

‘I would have never believed there were 87 living there.’

Authorities have launched an investigation to find out how the woman managed was able to hide the dogs for so long.

Prosecutor of Beziers, Patrick Mathé, said: ‘An investigation has been opened and assigned to the Gendarmerie in Pézenas.’

The dogs that survived were taken away to the local animal rescue centre, and the woman is being treated for ‘multiple injuries’ in a local hospital.
