Four Cattle Killed In Lightning Related Strike In Pattaya

Prolonged rain, thunder and lightning, didn‘t bode well for a local cow owner whose 4 animals were apparently struck by lightning at a cashew nut orchard opposite Siam Country Club Golf Course on June 10, 2008. One villager nearby offered to buy one of the dead cows that was pregnant in order to make a good luck amulet.

Local villagers tend to bring their cattle to graze in the 20 rai cashew nut orchard. One in particular, Mr. Preecha Jaruenwong(42), from Pong district, who also works as a private minibus driver for foreigners around the Pattaya South area, normally grazes his 3 cows and 1 bull in the area, constrained by an electrified fence. On the day in question, a PDN reporter noticed 4 lightning-struck animals and notified a local villager, who in turn notified the owner.

Mr. Preecha consequently sped down to the orchard and was distraught to find his animals lying dead. He was particularly upset about one of the cows, a breeder due to deliver on June 20th, because it had cost him many thousands of baht. There were no injuries on any of the animals as such, but the electrified wire was broken, looking like it had been struck by lightning. It seems like the animals had been seeking shelter, but had wandered too close to the wire when it was struck, dislocating the wire and possibly simultaneously killing the animals, too.

Some locals were standing around the incident, one of whom offered to buy the dead pregnant cow in order to make an amulet, which according to an ancient belief, is supposed to bring luck
