Former World Boxing Champion Arrested In Pattaya For Drug Dealing

Pattaya, August 31 [PDN]: At 4:30 am on the 30th August 2009 a former PABA world boxing champion was arrested by police on drug charges as he was driving to deliver Yah Ice to customers in the Pattaya area

In a sting operation, Mr. Sirimongkol Leamtoum or Oh [32], residing at No. 63 Moo 1, Bungyee toh , Tahnburi, Pratumthani province, was apprehended by Police Lietenant Colonel Tongchai Sookjarern, a police officer from Phan Thong, in front of the house no. 212/53 Moo. 5, Choknimitr 3 Nongprue. Mr. Sirimongkol had 28.4 grams of Yah Ice in his possession and he and his car, a silver Chevrolet, No. 7617 Bangkok, were taken to Banglamung police station for further investigation.

The former super light weight world boxing champion confessed that he had been hired [for 10,000 baht] by a Mr. Lek to deliver the drug to customers. He also admitted that he had taken the drug himself. He said he was making extra money while waiting for his upcoming fight in Mexico in one week’s time.

At 12:00 pm on the day of his arrest, the boxer’s parents, Mr. Manop Lemtoum, [53] and Mrs Buariem [57], accompanied by several friends traveled to see him in prison. They took turns to talk to Sirimongkol who seemed very stressed and covered his head with a cloth all the time.

His father said Sirimongkol left the training camp with his girlfriend to take her to the bus station to go home up country. His father called him at around 8.00 pm and Sirimongkol said he was on his way back. They then lost contact with him until they received the bad news at 11.00 pm.

Mr. Sirimongkol is a son of the owner of the boxing camp “Sing Manussak”. He had been the super flyweight and bantamweight champion of the World Boxing Union (WBU) in the year 1995 before abandoning his title to win the world championship in the higher rated World Boxing Council (WBC). He then further climbed the ranks to win the world boxing champion Institute PABA [Super lightweight] in 2007-2008.

Mr. Sirimongkol, who has gained widespread popularity in Thailand, apologized for disappointing his fans. No stranger to controversy, he also shocked his fans in 2006 when he posed as a sexy model in a magazine.
